The study of 3-dimensional spaces brings together elements from several areas of mathematics. The most notable are topology and geometry, but elements of number theory and analysis also make appearances. In the past 30 years, there have been striking developments in the mathematics of 3-dimensional manifolds. This book aims to introduce undergraduate students to some of these important developments. Low-Dimensional Geometry starts at a relatively elementary level, and its early chapters can be used as a brief introduction to hyperbolic geometry. However, the ultimate goal is to describe the very recently completed geometrization program for 3-dimensional manifolds. The journey to reach this goal emphasizes examples and concrete constructions as an introduction to more general statements. This includes the tessellations associated to the process of gluing together the sides of a polygon. Bending some of these tessellations provides a natural introduction to 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry and to the theory of kleinian groups, and it eventually leads to a discussion of the geometrization theorems for knot complements and 3-dimensional manifolds. This book is illustrated with many pictures, as the author intended to share his own enthusiasm for the beauty of some of the mathematical objects involved. However, it also emphasizes mathematical rigor and, with the exception of the most recent research breakthroughs, its constructions and statements are carefully justified.

From reader reviews:

Eleanor Hayes:

With other case, little persons like to read book Low-Dimensional Geometry (Student Mathematical Library: IAS/Park City Mathematical Subseries). You can choose the best book if you appreciate reading a book. Provided that we know about how is important the book Low-Dimensional Geometry (Student Mathematical Library: IAS/Park City Mathematical Subseries). You can add expertise and of course you can around the world by just a book. Absolutely right, since from book you can understand everything! From your country until foreign or abroad you will find yourself known. About simple factor until wonderful thing you may know that. In this era, we are able to open a book or maybe searching by internet unit. It is called e-book. You may use it when you feel weary to go to the library. Let's learn.

Nicole Reagan:

The book Low-Dimensional Geometry (Student Mathematical Library: IAS/Park City Mathematical Subseries) can give more knowledge and also the precise product information about everything you want. So why must we leave a good thing like a book Low-Dimensional Geometry (Student Mathematical Library: IAS/Park City Mathematical Subseries)? Several of you have a different opinion about reserve. But one aim this book can give many data for us. It is absolutely right. Right now, try to closer with your book. Knowledge or facts that you take for that, you are able to give for each other; it is possible to share all of these. Book Low-Dimensional Geometry (Student Mathematical Library: IAS/Park City Mathematical Subseries) has simple shape nevertheless, you know: it has great and large function for you. You can appearance the enormous world by wide open and read a e-book. So it is very wonderful.

Robert Olsen:

Reading a book tends to be new life style within this era globalization. With reading you can get a lot of information that may give you benefit in your life. Along with book everyone in this world can certainly share their idea. Books can also inspire a lot of people. Plenty of author can inspire their reader with their story as well as their experience. Not only the storyplot that share in the guides. But also they write about advantage about something that you need instance. How to get the good score toefl, or how to teach children, there are many kinds of book that you can get now. The authors nowadays always try to improve their proficiency in writing, they also doing some study before they write to the book. One of them is this Low-Dimensional Geometry (Student Mathematical Library: IAS/Park City Mathematical Subseries).
